remote car starters on manual cars illegal, my friend has a viper alarm and I asked why didn't you get the starter he said it was illegal on manuals... i'm just wondering if this is true..

Not that I know of. The only thing that is illegal pertaining to car starters is in Toronto to leave your car idiling.

Its illegal to run an automatic remote starter on a manual car. But as long as you run a remote starter designed for manual cars your ok. Trust me I work in a stereo shop.

alright bud thanks and cool.. what's the difference may i ask?

bbarbulo 16-Jan-2005 01:53 PM

manual starters have safety precautions built in so you don't start the car in gear hahaha

autos can only start in park or neutral from the factory... and sticks from the factory can only start with the clutch IN... and since you're not in the car... the clutch can't be in, so they have to bypass that and put in other safety precautions. In most cases, you leave the car running while you arm the alarm... that way the alarm knows you HAD to leave the car in neutral in order to leave it running and exit the car. It shuts the car off and locks it by itself. However, next time you open the door, say to leave your jacket in the car.... you just disabled the starter system, so you have to start the car with your key again, and reset the remote start.

thank you!

Where is the law for this? I looked through my higway traffic act and found nothing.

bbarbulo 17-Jan-2005 12:39 AM

not ILLEGAL, but whoever installs such a thing, their shop insurance would rape them sideways.... kinda like your avitar rbjeep :D

it wouldn't be in the HTA anyways, HTA is quasi-criminal.

shlammed 17-Jan-2005 06:45 AM

Places like future shop wont do them...at least they didnt when i worked there a few years back

Whiplash 17-Jan-2005 03:18 PM

as Bruno said, there are built in safety precautions..a number of presets that can not be violated, or it will not start

imported_gatherer 17-Jan-2005 03:22 PM

how do you leave the car running and exit the car ... AND.. take the key with you????

Whiplash 17-Jan-2005 04:05 PM

park car..
engage e-brake..
do not touch clutch or brake pedals..
turn off key and remove..
get out of car..
close door..

engine will shut down..
engage lock or alarm..

if door is opened or interior alarm goes off car will not start..this says there is a potential that car may have been put in gear
