Question 92-95 Civic Power Moonroof Malfuntioning

Car: 1992 Honda Civic Si
Problem: Power Moonroof malfunction.

The Moonroof opens and closes with difficulty.
The roof will move to the close position but remains stuck in the tilt position, and only moves with physical movitation in conjunction with pushing the close button.

It also opens with physical motivation pushing the glass upwards while pushing the open button on the roof.

The moonroof motor turns but when it becomes stuck it begins to emit a whinning sound.

Suggestions?

I usually have to give mine (95 ex coupe) a little nudge to open it as well.

Hmmm maybe the brushes on the motor are worn out. Thats the standard symptoms (forcing movement makes it go, whirring sound/no movement.) for worn brushes. My sunroof operates properly now that I greased the tracks with some white grease, previously it was shuddering when I opened/closed it.

to see the motor you gotta take the headliner out... you can look at my roof next time i see you cause my interier is rather naked

i usually just use motor oil on my tracks... does a double duty of preventing rust up there too

Put some lithium grease on the tracks... mine usually sticks after the winter until I do that.

I would try greasing the tracks before you muck around with the motor lol. brushes themselves arent prolly replaceable, youd prolly need to replace the whole motor :S

Lithium Grease or Silicon Spray the tracks. Clean the tracks out before hand.

Try replacing the switch first. A friend of mine had a similliar problem. The roof on his CRX would work on and off pressing button would work then it would stop and keep pressing it eventually would kick back in.
He replaced the switch and all is well.

Always keep the tracks greased!!!! my 1986 Prelude sunroof still works like new... I just grease it all the time. Too bad the starter went and I gotta scrap the car now I'm gonna cut the sunroof out and weld it into the EF sedan.

I'd do it in this order JSK...

1. remove liner
2. clean the tracks with brake cleaner - old grease gets sticky
3. apply new lithium/gpahite grease
4. test
5. if test fail, remove and clean motor and inspect brushes
6. replace brushes and re-grease bearings inside the motor.
7. inspect gears - replace any stripped gears.
8. remove and disassemble switch - rebuild (take contacts out, hit them with scotchbrite pads to remove oxydation, put back in with di-electric grease).

9. and you're done!!

that's what I did with the saturn power windows, replaced one regulator and motor assembly, cleaned/greased the rest of them, and VOILA! it's like new.

I had a similar problem JSK. I had something stuck in one of the tracks, and it prevented the roof from closing all the way. It also needed a little grease.
