5 speed driving questions

hey guys

so i just got a 99 civic si after dealing a messy situation with a Ford Probe but this car is my first 5 speed car

ive put like 500 km on it from practicing and im getting better but theres still a couple things i dont get

1) when i shift from 1st to second the car bucks than goes (is this because im letting off the clutch to quickly?)

2) i have a hard time getting into first so i sort of use my clutch to creep and apply gas after i realize the car is moving and let off the clutch is this bad

3) if im on second gear and start going slowly (under 20) the car starts to VIOLENTLY buck (almost like its rocking back and forth) so i give it gas and it evens out. Why does this happen and how can i avoid it

4) how can i tell if my clutch is burnt out or broken?

first gear to second is always very sensitive.

well it bucks from second to third sometimes also. is it because i let off the clutch 2 quickly?

It does that because you are not giving it the right amount of gas

You should rev match. Kind of hard to explain. But let's say you are at 3000rpm in 2nd gear and you know that when you go into 3rd and your clutch is fully out your rpms will be around 2500rpm so instead of just releasing the clutch, rev up a bit to around 2500rpm or a bit more while releasing the clutch. Will make it much smoother.
Also, every time you are slowly releasing of the clutch, the clutch is not making good contact and is bearly hooking therefore you are burning it off. To test if your clutch is still good get to 2000rpm-2500rpm in 4th or 5th gear and floor the gas, if the rpms move up and car does not accelerate, that means your clutch is slipping.
Good luck. And practice makes it perfect.

1) let the clutch out a little slower

2) If your moving, its hard to get into first.

3) you need more gas, or shift to first

4) motor will rev, but you'll go no where.. (you'll know if its shot)

yo didnt i tell u lol. i dont noe bout the burnin the clutch thing but there sayin the samething i told u. but wen i drive ( his car to be exact ) i can shift from w/e gear to w/e gear n not give it gas n it doesnt buck it smoothly catches up with the wheels and increases the rpm without feeling it. now wat im doing, is that wrong or bad.

bengali548 12-Mar-2009 11:39 PM

sirux 13-Mar-2009 09:16 AM

Yea takes a day or two to learn the basics.. I just started learning a few weeks ago and I'm somewhat getting better.
I rather have a tiptronic lol.

first time i ever drove, any car, was my dad's 99 SH lude. At first, i kept stalling it, then it kept bucking, then i eventually go it. sigh.. i wish my car was manual =( *cries in corner*

every time i drive my dads outlander which is tiptronic, i feel like in a driving simulator lol. i feel kinda stupid when i shift yet no clutch. just not the same. when you will get used to it, and will be perfect at it, you will not want to go tiptronic or auto.

civicEJ1 13-Mar-2009 11:34 AM

i hate traffic, absolutely hate it. therefore hate stick in traffic but wouldnt drive anthing else, must be stick. maybe wen i get older ill grab soemthing auto

the only way to get better is practise. people can only help so much.

just like shooting a puck with a hockey stick. if someone whos never done it before tried to hit top right hand corner, its not gonna happen until they put a little more practise in it so just keep trying.

D.T.P 13-Mar-2009 11:41 AM

in traffic i just leave a gap, and will try to keep a constant speed so i wouldnt have to slow down etc.... works most of the time.

D.T.P 13-Mar-2009 02:23 PM

jking just drive the same way as you do..when ppl honk at you if you stall ignore em.

sirux 13-Mar-2009 02:34 PM

What pissed me off is when I was on a hill and some paki got right behind me.. like a few inches..
I'm surprised I didn't back right into his vehicle even if I did he was a ******* regardless.
