4wd 3rd gen civic?

Parked in the employee parking lot at work... 3rd gen 4 dr hatch... and it was MINT, i'm talking like no rust, stock paint, stock rims... a beauty, i donno how it lasted this long to be quit honest...

but it had a 'RT 4WD' sticker that looked like a stock sticker, but that has to be an add on right? Honda never made a 4WD civic, esp back in the 80's did they??

I would've taken a pic but i didn't have my camera with me and i don't have my data cable for my phone here with me either...

Yeah they did. It's known as the "wagovan" and uses a early version of the 4wd system that is now in the CR-V

Honda made the Civic in 4WD versions all the way up to the 6th generation. I'm not sure if they made them in the 7th or in the 8th. We just never got them on this side of the pond. They all use Honda's Real Time 4wd Drive system.

Wagovan

I'm not sure about the 3rd gen. But from what I've read the later versions can actually split it up to 60/40 or 50/50 split for a time.

The way it works is the rear driveshaft is always spinning in the system. This represents the "speed" of the front of wheels, for lack of a better term. When there is a difference between the speed of the input shaft and the rear wheels, the viscous coupling or clutch packs (in the CR-V) engages to send power to the rear wheels. If the wheels are travelling at the same speed as the car, the car is FWD.

That's RT4WD in a nutshell.

Real Time 4WD is weaker than All Time 4WD I believe. Better than none at all.

Yeah, stock I don't beleive the Honda system can take that much power. However, like anything, it can be modded for more power, lol.

you can, but I would think it would be a lot of custom work, its not like anybody makes parts for those cars.....in the end its probably not worth it, enless you were very skilled and looking for a very unique (still not fast) project...
