2006 Civic LAF sensor recall
Anybody else get this notice?
Just thought I'd share my disaster of a story. I took it into Millwoods Honda (I've moved out to Edmonton) to get my software updated. It was quick and painless or so I thought.
I drove the car home, parked it. Let it sit outside in the -22 we've been having up here. [ off topic: I've only plugged the car in once and that was when it was -35 (-50 with the windchill in Russell MB) -- surprisingly the little Civic starts well in subzero temps. ]
Today I went downtown (Edmonton) and the engine started acting up. It was worse than a newbie learning to drive standard. Jerking, stalling. when the engine would idle at a light and i would give it gas -- it would stall. I was furious and pissed off as you can imagine and nearly got in an accident. It must have stalled about 30 times. Let alone when I was driving the car, it was jerky like someone was messing around with my clutch.
I made it alive back to the dealership and cursed the service advisor up and down.
Turns out the technician said that the old sensor was not compatible with the new software that they updated the day before. WTF. so 1.5hr later I have a new sensor that is compatible with the new software. Hopefully tomorrow everything works fine.
Honda Canada is going to get an earful from me.
Moral of the story: don't buy a new model in the first year they come out. You end up being a guinea pig for everyone else. I feel like I'm running Windows Vista...
Take it easy,
Marbss in Edmonton.

Both of my 06's have been problem free except for a letter for the SRS sensor, but that's it. They have had a few things fixed, but it was more me being **** about stuff, like some squeaks and rattles. Nothing mechanical though.
It seems to be a love/hate relationship with the 06. Owner's either zero problems or lots.
What is the LAF anyway?

I think I read about that recall in Motor Trend, they software gets reflashed so that it smoothes out upshifts, so it doesn't hold the throttle when you put the clutch in? If that is the same one, they didn't have a problem with it.

Oh ic, this is what I was talking about:
"Our complaints last issue, among those made by other Si owners pertaining to the delay in rpm drop between shifts, have warranted some attention from the Honda techies. The Honda service bulletin 06-052 — affecting all cars from VIN 6H700001 through 6H707606 — updates the PGM-FI software in the ECM and claims to improve, but not completely eliminate, the aforementioned problem. We had our complimentary software update done at 25,462 miles and, though there remains a noticeable delay, some of the jerkiness on the upshifts has been alleviated."
It's actually from Road&Track http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=4706

/\/\/\ That software update is for the Si's only and only for Si's within a certain VIN range. Any July 06 or later built Si and the 07 Si's come with the updated software already installed.
The update the O/P is referring to is only for the regular model Civic's and again, only certain one's.

update Feb 15.
my engine light is now on. WTF is going on?
I took it back to the dealership last night. they said they need a Honda Tech in Ontario to troubleshoot it and I have to bring it in next Tuesday (after the Family Day holiday here in AB)
I have a solution -- downgrade my software.
I've driven Honda's since I was first licenced in the early 1990s, and this is really ticking me off. This is unlike any other experience I've ever had. This is something 'I'd expect from Ford, GM or Mercedes Benz (yes they do make some crappy cars).
[end of rant]
on a postive note at least we have a warranty!

update feb 20:
I dropped the car off at the local dealership at 8am. I got it back at around 4pm. The mechanics were on with the Honda Tech Line (kinda of like 2nd level or 3rd level tech support) troubleshooting the issue. The service advisor said they replaced a Mass air flow sensor and they will send me the paperwork in a few days because it was an issue they have to sort out with Honda Canada. Now hopefully the engine light doesn't come on. I personally think the frigid weather we had last week could be to blame as it was consistantly in the -20s for several days and my car is parked outside. although who knows... Honda should have done cold weather testing... Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Did mine today along with a B1 service and oil change. The car seems to run smoother now and start easier. I also had the tranny fluid changed to Amsoil MTF and it shifts like a dream.
They did find that both front upper strut mounts were worn and need replacing. Oh well, that's what the warranty is for.
