Wheel Thread snapped off
Hi all,
I was taking my rims off the other day and one of them came off with the thread (thread of the wheel cracked, most likely due to rust). I grabbed a spare nut and the thread still had good enough length for me to torque it down good to 80lb
2 questions,
How to avoid this? is there special lube to use on the threads to avoid this when changing rims?
2nd question, how do I fix this? Can I fix this at home? What's the usual repair bill if I bring the car somewhere?
Thanks

I assume you mean your wheel stud is stripped.
You will need to remove the wheel stud. You just take a hammer and hit it untill it falls out. On some makes you must remove the hub in order to get the stud out. OR you can cut the stud in half to take it out.. then grind down a huge chunk to make it fit.. but i really don't like doing this.

there is a compund i use on aircraft brake bolts before i torque them down that way they wont be a pain in the butt when taking them off and less chance of stripping them. its called " anti-sieze" compound, it comes in silver or bronze in color and should be able to get it at canadian tire. all you do is coat the threads of the stud or bolt with it just before putting on the nut. as for your stud being stripped, depends how bad it is, if its not too bad you can get a die and re-thread it to clean it up, but if its bad you should replace it.

i use antiseize on my lugs, depending on the car/wheel combo sometimes i feel it out by hand and sometimes i use a torque wrench. and i use really delicate lugs (koyokugen) and have never had a problem.
