hi currently i have a kuhmo estca 711 (discontinued tire) one needs replacment now that said i have a friend who has a kuhmo escta full directional tire 4 in total 215/45\17 im just not sure what the diffrence is between the two maybe someone can explain it to me and would this still fit on my 17 inch rim thanks johnny.

The first # is the tread width. The second # is the side wall thickness/profile in relation to the width (first number) as a % of the width. So a 205/40 means the side wall profile dimension is 40% of the width of the tread. And the third # is the rim size.

So for your question; 215 is wider than 205 and 45% is larger than 40%, so the 215/45 would be wider and taller. Just over 1" taller in diameter compared to the 205/40. It's probably too large for your application. Being about 5% larger, your speedometer would read 100kph but you'd actually be traveling 105kph.

205/40/17 is as close as you can get to the original oem tire size diameter, which is what you want to keep consistant. Width and rim size is not as important. The overall diameter is what effects your speedometer/odometer readings.

okay thanks i think what you said makes sence, now if i replaced all 4 tires onto the rims wouldnt it be better and last longer if it has more width and side wall .....sorry im new to this and wanna make the best decision

They won't necessarily last longer. Plus If your car is lowered, the 215/45/17's will most likely rub...

I strongly suggest you get the proper size tires. Check out TorontoJDM. They have good quality tires in your size for really good prices. I bought a set of summer tires from them last year and I'm very happy with them.

I have 4 Duron, bought from TorontoJDM you can have for $100 for all four. I forget the size, but could look at them if you were interested. 17" STI stock size tire I believe.
Summer tire, used one summer.

EDIT:
Think of your transmission constantly working because you have improper tire size, would act like you're always turning.

I think your thinking if one front tire was larger than the other, that would happen.

If all his tires are larger (and the same size), there's no issue other than the speedometer/odometer will be inaccurate and acceleration may suffer a bit.
