strange whining noise.. kinda sounds like metal
hi
recently when i start driving.. in first and second then continues on through the gears and when the car is moving ..there is a gridingin/screeching noise coming from the front wheels..what could this be? is this a sign of ball joints?
also theres a similar screech when the clutch is pressed down
thanks
car is 98 civic hatch cx

Brakes probably very close to the end of their life. Pop a tire off and have a look at your pads.
Ball joints are a swaying, mostly when cornering; As if your car is rolling its ankle. If you jack your car up, the part that connects to your Upper control arm and ball joint grab it and pull/push a few times. If it has a lot of play, yes, you need ball joints, too.
Sometimes a little spray of grease can help your ball joints too. I recommend white Lithium grease, easy to use in a spray can. But that's if your parked, crank your wheels side to side, and get screech-screech.
TTFN!

I would guess the screeching is (as brian said) brake pads are worn down to the squealer tabs.
The other noise when you push the clutch is just the rubber seal on the slave cylinder on the tranny. It gets dried out and creeks. Mine does this from time to time. Just pull the rubber boot back and spray some silicone lube or white grease in there.
Ball joints may not have play but may still be bad and need to be replaced, as mine did. I had a creeking sound when turning the wheels side to side (while staionary). Every time I checked the ball joint for play, they were fine. Later I found a split in the one lower ball joint boot and decided to replace both sides. It was definitely bad. lol.

Clutches don't usually make any noise when they wear out. They will start slipping (engine revs while in gear with clutch engaged and car doesn't accelerate) and or it can be difficult to pull it in or out of gear with the clutch dis-engaged.
Try spraying white grease or silicone lube like I mentioned before and see if the creaking noise goes away when you press/release the clutch.
Wheel bearings that are bad can feel like driving on gravel (even when driving on smooth pavement). They usually make a groaning sound that gets worse the faster you go. They can usually be diagnosed by putting the car up on a hoist or jack stands and grabbing the wheel at 3 and 9 and wiggling it firmly back and forth. If there is play, you'll feel it and you'll see the axle move with the wheel, and the spindle/hub will stay stationary.
Still think it's your brake pads on their last legs though.

How I check for weel bearings:
While driving on a nice paved road, you might head a groan/moan, that you may mistake for road noise. Swirve/Corner left, check if the noise stops. Then Swirve/Corner Right, check if the noise stops.
If the noise stops while cornering left, it's your right wheel bearing. Vise Versa.
It may be difficult to tell what the noise, unless someone shows you first hand... Good luck none the less =]

eBay would have all that stuff very cheap, if cheaps what you're looking for. I paid $220 cdn for front rotors, pads, rear drums, and shoes, shipped from Quebec.
I think when I did the wife Integra it was $70 per rotor, and I forget what the Pad price was, from NAPA.
Brake jobs are very easy to do in a driveway. I'm sure someone here would/could help you out if they lived close. Or maybe at the next meet lol.
MPR sould know more about prices.
