painting rims
 

as the title says im painting my rims. there 14" ten spoke. i want to paint them bronze and want to get a certain finish. ive seen rims with this grainy finish almost feels like sandpaper. i was wondering if there is any way i can achieve this myself or would it be something a shop would have to do. either way im going to paint them myself wether or not i can get that finish or not, i was just wondering if i would be able to do it.

get a paint with that finish and you should be alright

do you know what kind of paint that is. from the looks of it, i thought that they were sand blasted and then painted but im not sure.

Are you talking about Krinkle Paint.. like on a valvecover?

If you go to Crappy Tire in the spray paint section there is actual textured paints in a can you can guy..

Personally I've never seen a textured rim but if done right there is potential.

Im not too sure about the grainy finish, but i painted my type r rims gold, a couple years ago, and they still look good.
i completly stripped them down to the bare aluminum, primed them, baked in the oven 1 by 1, painted and back into the oven again....
came out good!

like i know of like hammer paint and such that gives you a certain finish but i dont know if its the same. i went to wheels direct by Shepard and McCowan and i saw a rim with the finish im looking for. also seen it in other stores but i dont noe how to get it. i doubt its wrinkle paint, but none the less i will look further into it and see what i come up with.

so i found a paint with the finish i want, its not the kind of bronze i was looking for but a little lighter. i got it from home depot. its some rust prevention paint. i hope it will be ok to use for my rims but thats all i got right now. im going paint them tomorrow, unfortunately i dont have a spare set of wheels for my car so im going to have to paint them one by one. will post pics of before and after. as far as procedure, i plan on just roughing the surface up and painting them directly as it has a textured finish so it will hide imperfections. the only thing im not sure of it if i should use primer or not. i know i can just straight paint it but im not sure what would be better. i dont plan on keeping them for long but i do plan on giving them to a friend next season as a small upgrade from the rims he has.

u dont need to prime it as long as u sand it good and put on a nice coat of clear coat after it should last u awhile remember when u spraying the paint on do thin and even coats or else u will get runs.

its done. havent got pics yet, but im very pleased as its the first time ive done it or even used spraypaint before so. im kinda a perfectionist and is some what upset with myself that i didnt do a clean job. i didnt put a clear coat as i have a certain finish to the paint and a clear coat would just ruin it but it looks great. i just hope that theyll stay that way. i dont know if there is any way of avoiding brake dust ruining the paint and making it really hard for me to clean them, but i guess ill have to see when the time comes. will post pics tmr.
