Lowest profile tires on SiR rims?
I need to replace my tires on my SiR rims... I dropped down to 205/50R15s from the stock rubber and was wondering how much lower I can go... would 45 raise would be ok? I think I've seen as low as 40 (or it could have been 45) raise on these rims and it looked pretty good.

the middle number 50 is a % of the 1st number. you increased the width from 195 to 205, and at the same time lowered the aspect ratio from 55 to 50. in other words, you didn't 'drop down' much.
let's do the math. .5*205 = 102.5mm .55*195 = 107.25mm so your sidewall height is a mere 4.75 mm off. by comparison, if you actually DID drop down a size in sidewall height, you would have gone to a 195/50/15 which would mean .5*195 = 97.5 -> or a 9.75 mm difference. a 205/45/15 would be .45*205 = 92.25, a full 15 mm off the original tire size. remember that this is single sidewall, and a tire had one on each side, so multiply the difference by 2x. also, from an aesthetic point of view, this lowers the car while increasing the wheelwell gap, so it means you gotta lower the car a bit more, even though the belly of the car is already 15 mm lower to the ground.

hate to break it to you, you didn't 'drop down' to a lower profile. you kept the exact same (within millimeters) sidewall height.

BTW, what car is this going onto? if it's an ED, then you SHOULD go lower.

These SiR rims are going on a 98 Si... the car has been lowered w/ HR springs (2" drop I think). I had no rubbing issues w/ this setup and to me looked good but was looking at a lower profile but will give up and stick with 205/50. Just looking for tires now... the Falken tires special listed on this site looks good.
