Comparing Winter Tyres
Hi all,
My 2010 Honda Civic 4 door DXG came with pretty ugly 15inch stock rims with 195/65/15 Dunlop all seasons.
Since I live in Toronto - I might as well get a new set of winter tyres and use the stock rims for the winter boots - when summer comes along I plan on buying a new set of either 16 or 17 inch wheels with summer performance tyres.
So at present, I'm debating which winter tyres to go with - my budget is around 450-500 max. I was looking at Michelin X Ice - they seemed pretty good, not too noisy and good traction in the snow.
Can anyone suggest a good winter tyre - also I'd like to get a tyre size thats a little wider than the 195/65/15s so whats the bext best size I could put on car without losing too much on the driving side?
And finally, are winter tyres really noisy in the dry? Should I install them now...or buy them and wait till November?

I highly recommend the Continental Extreme Winter Contacts. Little cheaper I think then the X-ice and very similar for noise, wet/dry traction and snow/ice traction.
As for when to install, generally when the average temp is below 7 degrees you should switch to the winters

I haven't personally used the bridgstones, tho I have RE-11's for summer tires. I can say the quality of my tires is great, but they are nothing at all like winter tires, kinda apples and oranges deal. As for width, stay 195. Skinny tires cut through the snow better and get down to the pavement. Leave the wider tires for the summer mode.
