This is from another site, and it's also referring to a 2001 1.7 EL.
I hope it helps you:

this i can help you with my friend.
i dont have any photos but ill try and discribe it easly enough .

you need to remove the panel that has the cig. lighter attached to it. that whole piece comes out , it has clips all the way around. youre going to need a flat flexable tool, start in one corner and work it around to pop out the piece. its in there real tight, dont be scared to pull

once the piece pops out unplug the cig lighter harness and heated seat buttons if you have them.

there is going to be 2 screws 8mm holding the radio consol in place, they are hidden on the top side where the panel use to be . (under the whole radio consol) once those 2 screws are out the whole consol comes out, radio, h-vacs and all.
the easyest way to remove it is to pop out the air vent covers, (pry one side out at a time) pull it out, this too may be clipped in tight but its all one piece and will come out as long as you removed the screws

unplug all the harnesses, 4 of them plus the radio one.

now with the radio consol in hand pull off the hvac knobs, unscrew the 3 brass color screws holding the hvac in place. once thats off all the radio screws and accessable and you can figure out the rest.

Not sure if you got the radio out yet

there is a pocket in front of the shifter above the cup holders, hold each side and pop it down. Then remove the 2 8mm screws that are holding it in place. hope that was some help

let me know
