99 Acura 1.6EL - engine light is on

please help!

my car goes in to 1st gear, rmps are up, put it in to 2nd gear, it starts to chug along (almost like i switched gears and the car was not going fast enough for that gear) but that isnt the case. so then it chugs along then all of a sudden it gives the rpms go up to about 4-5 rpms, put it in 3rd gear and it starts to chug along and then all of a sudden it gives and rpms go up, switch to 4th gear. Doesnt seem to happen in 4th or 5th gear.

I hope this makes and someone can help me figure out what is wrong with it. Any insight on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The engine light is staying on the whole time.

I m not sure what you mean by chug ? .. I m guessing hesitation..

anyways , get a quote for the engine light , that would be first thing i do... A lot of mechanics dont even charge you to get a quote , if you are a regular at any mechanic shop they should be able to give you a quote for free ( at least i get it for free)

yes, chug i mean it is hesitating. once i put it in the the higher gear the car hesitates and then after about 10 secs if will give and the car starts to go as normal and it revs up. Then switch it to the next gear and it starts to hesitate again.

thanks for your suggestion.

save yourself a lot of time and get the engine light code.

I had the same problem in my jetta and it was all electrical ... Unfortunately in my case i had not code , so it went from transmission , ecu , tune up , catalytic converter , to finally ( after 1500$) electrical.. Worst part is , it is almost impossible to solve an electrical problem in jettas !!

O2 sensor. Google the paper clip trick to count the number of blinks on the CEL and you should get the O2 sensor code.

I don't believe having a bad o2 sensor would make your car hesitate.

Click here to see what code you are getting.

No point in even guessing what the problem could be.

Scan it, there lies your problem.

man buy a cheap engine code reader from CT as it can be used on any obd2 car. Excellent tool to help with engine codes. The code will tell if its misfire, or bad sensor. Could be alot of different things like plugs, plug wires, distributor, or just cap and rotor, map sensor, vss, ect. Get the reader its usefullness is worth the money.
