Need advice quick please!!!

Just got an '04 Si coupe. Love the car. But I think our '03 LX sedan is jealous. My wife went to start her up this morning to take our Little Man to school. With the engine running, there's a nice rattling which can be heard strongly from the driver's side

Only relevant info I can think of is that we had the timing belt and water pump done over the summer.

Oh - the car was just in over the weekend for brakes and the oil was checked. Didn't need to be changed. Now the oil is pretty black and level is low. No visible leaks

Any thoughts??? Car's getting towed to our mechanic on Friday. Wondering if I need to start shopping for an engine.

I'll search the board tomorrow, so I admit this is a panic post.

If the oil is low, try topping it up and running it again to see if the noise is gone. Did the noise changer with engine rpm? (when you rev the engine does the noise get worse, better, rise and fall with the rpm?).

You'll have to describe the sound in more detail and give us a bit more info...
