Guys, i just broke my hood release handle on my ek about 5 minutes ago. Is it something that can be bought off Honda? Does the cable go into the firewall, then behind the plastic fender liner or does it go in the engine bay?

I broke mine too on Saturday, I am not bothering replacing it as I can still pul on the plastic part the handle was attached to. I am thinking you would have to replace the whole thing, cable included and I am sure its not cheap.

i broke mine of in the summer. You woudl need to replace the whole cable to fix it

just use a pair of pliers to open your hood

the part is cheap but a hassle to replace. mine broke last winter and i'm using a rubber sleeve i bought at CT to replace the handle. works well as the rubber gives you a firm grip when pulling.

part costs like 20-30 dollars if i remember correctly.
its cheap to buy but super labour extensive.
it goes thru the wall into the side of the inner apron inside the fenders.

club of broken handles...lol....is this a flaw in design or jus cheap plastic....well anyways it is a biatch to replace it...as Jay said...thru the wall and and fender...gonna do it soon tymes.

mine was broken on my car when i bought it and they told me they had to fix it to pass safety.
the next day it was fixed.

if just the handle broke, then replace the handle...if the cable snapped, well thats a whole other story....replacing the handle takes no longer than 20min

you cant replace the handle unless you wanna ghetto rig with a canadian tire part.

btw its actually not a design flaw.
every generation civic except for the 6th generation they use a lever type handle where the top part remains attached and you just pull the bottom part up.

with the 6th gen they made it so that you have to pull the entire handle assembly straight forward then upwards.

people being in a hurry and people that dont know this put their hand at the bottom of the handle and pull it and it breaks right then or after a while once the plastic cant tolerate the stress anymore.

honda knew this thats why they went back to their old design on all the 01 and up models.

ahh...guess its a 6th gen thing cuz I replaced mine with one from my parts car on my 4th gen

ya with the 6 gen the handle piece is a part of the cable.... way to much work for what its worth...

i bought my car with it broken...some nice adjustable pliers do the trick and can be used as a form of security...

exactly.. any real man should have some basic tools in his car to begin with.. so this "broken hood release handle" issue you speak of is a non-issue

I can still open mine without tools, it's really not that big a deal as everyone else has said.

mine also broke off about 2 yrs ago, i got the replacement part from honda n it is still in its original bag when i first purchased it.
such a hassel to get it replace.

You can pick up the hood release cable at your local o Reilly auto parts for under$13. And you have to replace the entire cable. Install shouldn't be too tough so long as you route it like the old one. I'll let you know as I'll be replacing my daughter's soon.
