Need an opinion on headers, OEM vs Aftermarket

Hey TCC,

I'm replacing the stock header on my B16 due to damage of Toronto roads have done to it lol

So I've been looking around for cheap alternatives for now due to money is tight right now and I found a USDM 4-2-1 ITR header and a DC sports header.

Would you recommend getting the ITR header or DC sports header? Both are under $100 but the DC header costs more.

Need some opinions please!

Thanks!

I have a JDM ITR 4-1 header on my b16 and love it. Only paid $100 for it too.

Check the collector diameter. Go with which ever has the larger. The ITR header should have a collector diameter of 2-3/8" or 2-1/2". That is the main bottle-neck on the stock b16 header, where it shrinks down to a tiny 2" or so...

If you also replace the full exhaust system with larger diameter piping (2-3/8 ro 2-1/2) you'll notice a slight drop in torque below 3000, but a nice gain from about 4500 on up to redline at 8200.

Any exhaust shop should carry them and should sell you one for a couple bucks.

^Yes.

Given the option to choose between a steel header with 2.5" collector or a stainless header with a 2.25" collector, I would choose the one with the larger collector over the one with better material, but that's just me. And of course, a stainless header with 2.5" collector would be the best option.

^Are you asking me or the OP?

My whole exhaust system is 2.5" header to tip.

Posting here to save some space. Anyways I ended up going with the DC sport header just cause my buddy was selling it for dirt cheap.

After putting on the header I notice that there is some smoke coming from where it attaches to the block. Could it be a leak in the gasket somewhere?

^If the gasket is in good condition and you torqued all the bolts properly, then it could be that the header has a warped flange.

some say change the gasket everytime you take it off. but hope its the gasket because if its a warped flange then that may be the reason it was dirt cheap

My gasket is the original with over 260k on it. As long as it's in good condition, there's no reason to replace it.

Is there exhaust blowing out at the flange or is there just some smoke coming off the pipes/flange? If there is any moisture or other foreign materials (oil etc) that got on the header, it'll "cook" it off when it gets hot...

^Neither have I for that matter...lol Just wasn't sure if the OP had fully tightened all the bolts, but also don't want them to break the studs off trying to tighten them too much...
