DIY Wheel Bearing Removal/Install - How Do I Pop It out with a slide hammer? Make the

I need to change my drivers side wheel bearing on the front. I was searching through all the threads and read that instead of pressing everything off and on you can simply use a slide hammer to remove the bearing and tighten the axle nut back on to push it back in
I need to get this done on a saturday morning and I dont have access to a shop nor do I even own a slide hammer but I can make one tomorrow at work. Need to know what it has to be sized like.

Anyone have any ideas on what size I need to make it (dimensions etc)

Also, Ive never swapped a wheel bearing. I dont even know where it is. If you know how to use this method could you walk me through it. I know there are c-clips and such i believe but dont know exactly what needs to come off etc.

I need to do this with handtools on a cold canada day in a driveway. Wont be pretty. Need help

Hope someone can help

have fun is all i can say.
Rusty c-clips and cold hands is a bad combo.

It kind of sucks to do with a press nevermind without one.

Good luck....seriously.

its a pain in the *** but i used a old bearing and a large socket while supporting the hub on the ground with some large 4x4 wood. a piece of bearing will still be on the hub after yo knock off the hub and must dremmel or torch it off. its under tenshion and will break off. If you cant find a old bearing find something like a hockey puck with something on the top and bottom to take the hits and apply pressure evenly. Its also just as hard to put the new bearing in as to take it off. I had to get it pressed at a shop into the hub.
If you have never done this before i honestly dont think its worth wild trying to save a few dollars and doing this type of job yourself. It would be easier just to take the hub down and take it to a shop with the new bearing and ask them to install.
Honestly do what you know you can do and take the rest to a shop.
all the best

^^^^great advice....and basically what i was getting at.
What little $$$ you would pay a shop to press in the new bearing is worth NOT destroying anything.

Wheel bearing is a quick job for most mechanics who have proper tools (and almost all shops do) and it can be done in about 30 minutes. I once did a rear hub bearing work and was charged for 40, which I thought was more than fair.

Just to buy the 1/2" drive breaker bar + 1/2" 32mm socket will cost you more than that, though good tools to invest, but consider the job nature and how often you would use these tools (especially 32mm socket), you might as well let a shop do it.

Visit our affiliate page, pick a shop that is closer to you and go there on Saturday.

Good luck.

step 1: take the rotor off and caliper off (leave hanging)

step 2: take axle nut off, attach slide hammer to hub, wack away untill the hub comes out.

Step 3: remove spindle

Step 4, remove clip, pound out bearing

Step 5: press in new bearing, ive always used a hammer, no press here, been doing it for years without a press. Reinstall clip

Step 6: cut outer race or air hammer outer race off of hub

Step 7: press hub back into spindle

Step 8: reinstall.

Its a wheel bearing, i only get 1.2 to do it, its not rocket science.
