safe power on a stock Y8 Head

Sorry if this has been covered. I searched here and googled and found nothing significant.

I am picking up a built D16Y8 block and have just rebuilt my Y8 head OEM style. I am running boost but want to know how much power is safe for the stock head. I ran 220 WHP no problem, the block had one tho.

Just need some numbers so I can be safe. Daily driving it as well.

Thanks.

Um...what??

Head has nothing to do with how much power you can make.

You said a built block. What does that mean? What rods? What pistons? Its all in the bottom end not the head.

Upgrading parts in the cylinder head such as cams, valves, springs and such, will help make it easier to get up to your desired power, but it has nothing to do with how much it can handle. As long as you stay within stock rev limit, it won't make any difference in reliability or capability.

I bought Tyson09 on here's block. H beam rods, JE pistons, sleeved.

I thought that like a lower end there is a breaking point to what a head can handle. I know you don't really need a built head for boost.

Just wanted to know if I should be scared to turn the boost up or if I can have some fun. The bootom end is bullet proof. The oil flow is the biggest problem in a Y8 and the pump is brand new and shimmed and ported.

Does a Y8 tranny have a max potental?

Yes...and no. Hell B series transmissions explode with stock engines lol. Its all how you drive it really. You push the little single cam to 300-350whp, upgraded shafts and go to the strip with slicks, the side gears on the diff are almost guaranteed to explode if you will be launching it. On the other hand gradual acceleration, it will hold up to no problem.

Regarding max power, I would stay under 300whp just because
A. Why do you need more? Fwd car becomes useless after 250whp or so. Torque steer even with lsd differential,
B. Its a single cam with small pistons. Lots of boost and hard driving will brake parts.

An engine that was never meant to see such power will never be as reliable as it was in original state. Moreover, what turbo are you using? If its something small, I wouldn't be spinning it up to its full potential daily, you always need some room as reserve.

There really isn't a restriction on how much power a head can handle. There is an rpm limit. Usually the springs and retainers are the weak point.

thanks for the info guys. Guess I didn't word it quite right at first. Think I'm going to go for around 225-250 WHP. Should be more than enough power for a DD. I'll talk with Zeeman and possible have a switch installed for a street tune and a track or wkend tune.

I would say at least upgrade springs/retainers if you want to go over 250whp.

Frozen's 400whp D-series bent valves very quickly and he was using a COMPLETELY stock head.

If you want to crank it up to like 400whp i'd do the valves too.

Typically people would build just the bottom end for boost, but i'd do at least the springs/retainers if you want to make lots of power, for what little $$$ springs/retainers cost think of it as cheap insurance, valve float is the last thing you want.
