Plz help engine revs high on and off while idle

HONDA CIVIC CX 2000

okay...so I havent drove my car or started it up in 3 weeks. Today I switched my car battery and tried starting it and it did not start...so I called Canadian Tire and they told me to give the battery a boost and that since its been sitting at the store for so long, the battery might just need a quick jump start...once i tried that, it started up....

now,
the problem im having is, this has never happened before...the engine was always very quiet and jus today, it started reving up sooo high almost like its going to blow and then it would stop and start again..on and off every other second. I know the previous owner did not change the engine oil...and i havent yet changed it myself...but i did add 1 litre of engine oil to see if that helps, it had on affect...

now im thinking it could be air control idle valve or egr?

is this something i can fix?
I drove the car around while it was reving high and parked the car and checked the smoke, it seems to be fine..no white smoke, no funny smell..nothing...

anyone have this problem?

any answer is helpful as i need to know if this is something to do with the engine...thanx

So at idle the engine was surging? Revving up, then dropping, then up again...and so on...?

Could be a number of things... I'm thinking it could be: vacuum leak, IAC valve, buttler fly stop adjustment (though that wouldn't change on it's own)...

The oil level, or adding oil will not affect the idle.

Your car may not have an EGR system...

With the engine running and the hood up, listen for hissing around the intake manifold. See if you can hear a vacuum leak...

How high does it rev?

You can take off the iac valve by removing 2 bolts that hold it, removing 2 hoses and 1 plug. Then clean that with carb/throttle body cleaner. Let it dry and see if that helps. I always notice that my car runs a bit smoother after an oil change, could help a bit but highly doubt will fix the problem.

You said you added 1L of oil, was it low?

There is actually 4 bolts holding the iac valve in the ek models ... It is a little bit harder to remove since you have to take the TB out first unless you can somehow remove the bottom 2 bolts

But as far as i know the iac valve would only make your rpm drop , not increase...

thank you guys...i appreciate the fast reply...and yea im not sure what the problem may be...unfortunately i cant tell the rpm on my car cuz i have the CX base model with no Tachometer...but all i know is it does rev really high...

long story short...
i bought this car from this guy,
he lied about the Klix...cluster showed 159,000...but vehicle history showed 250km...
so i did get half my money back...but for the time being...i was going thru a lot of trouble getting my money back...so for a month the car just sat there in park..
i did not drive the car or start it since i bought it..cept to drive it home...but the car engine was very quiet the few times i started it up..but shortly after i saw that the battery was dead and my car did not start..so
i replaced the battery..and i startd up the car..and this is when all this ahppened...

and yes...the reason i put 1 litre engine oil in it is because since the car just sat there...the engine oil was nearly down to the bottom..so i put a litre in to start it up....

i read on a few forums that the car can rev up high if it hasnt been started up for a long time..true?
and yea i plan on cleaning the IAC, what is the best brand i can use to clean it?

and how do i clean the EGR..it loooks so complicated from DIY...

car revs highhh...
btw it is standard...manual gear if that helps

Yes the car will run at higher rpm if it was parked for a while but after it warms up it should still go down to its normal idle speed.

Go to crappy tire and get some motomaster throttle body/carb cleaner both work well.

Also you do not have an egr valve.

Ok so maybe I spoke too soon. Today I started my car and it was completely quiet but once the car heated up half way then the engine started reving up and down again. Now I'm not sure if it's cuz it's low on engine oil. Cuz last time it was nearly empty and I added 1 litre to start it up wen I changed the battery. So could be cuz it's low on oil?

okay...this is so odd thogh...
i read so many people complaining how their engine revs high once its on start right away, and it disappears when the oil temp goes half way...

so...why is mine doing the opposite...its fine wen its cold and starts to rev up high once it heats up...unbelievable...i cant believe Honda's are this bad...

tried cleaning my IAC..its not that

it cant be the Thermostat can it? My heater works just fine...

I'm going to fill up my oil and do an oil change tomm...but why in the world would my engine rev high even if I dont have much oil in the engine?

-You mean coolant/engine temp (there is no oil temp gauge), and the idle should go down after a minute or so, well before the engine is fully warmed up (depending on the outside air temp...the colder it is the longer it will be on high-idle).

so...why is mine doing the opposite...its fine wen its cold and starts to rev up high once it heats up...unbelievable...i cant believe Honda's are this bad...

-Your's is the only one I've heard of this happening...just because yours is doing this doesn't mean "all honda's are this bad".

-I suggest you take it to a trusted shop and have it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.

-The level of oil in your engine has nothing to do with how high it idles...so as long as you have enough oil in there and it looks fine, don't waste your time changing it.

yup i have...my coolant level is topped off...

lol...i said "Honda's are bad" just cuz of the situation im in ...but i love my EK
in fact, all my cars are honda's ...had a 03 EL, then a prelude and now a hatch...lol

this is the first time i had a problem like this wit any of my cars...

anyways,
just out of curiosity, what are the symptoms of a vacuum leak?
I dont think its the IAC and most of you dont think its that either...

anyone know anything about Base Idle Speed Screw?

so yeah its the TPS...thanx guys for the help...im looking at a used part for $40...and putting it in myself
