Engine swap for 2003 Civic LX

Hey guys I need a little help with something My engine recently blew on a 2003 civic LX - non vtec. Now keeping in mind cost and time, I was wondering if I should put the stock LX D17 motor back in the car or pay a little more and get the Si Vtec D17 motor.

A little advice would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Are you looking for power or you dont mind driving almost the same engine. with the d17 SI, you wont be feeling much power. if you want power or go K swap..

Whats your budget?

I know about the K series swap, but I also know it costs about 9 grand...not interested in that...cheapest way to get more of a fun factor is what I'm looking for...

I had the same problem as you, i would get the Si, it will be a little more work for something that most people would say is a waste but they havent owned a 7th gen.

You cant swap anything other than a K series legally into a 7th gen.

You legally can swap a b18 from an 01 teg into your 01 7th gen legally but it would be all custom and not worth the money at all. There is only one b18 7th gen i have heard of and its a full on race car. so yeah.

you can get cheap k series' dont always think k20.

there are some k24's non vtec that can put out close to 200 whp. boosting them is also fun apperantly. Do some googling on tuning non vtec k24's i did read it would put out good numbers. and may be cheaper than a vtec k20. Best of luck.

i think they are the engines from some CRV's and Accords. Dont know the exact engine code because wiki doesnt say whether its vtec or not.

apperantly All k series engines have vtec. its just some come with non vtec cams.

i know for a fact that i saw a thread somewhere that was about a non vtec k24 making 21Xwhp NA. cant seem to find it.

i dont know for certain what engine code it was, im not trying to feed false info, and im at work and cant search the net like crazy. But i did see that thread somewhere.

When i had my 7th gen i was looking into this swap. But i got rid of the car after the front wheel bearings went and the car started to burn too much oil for my liking.

Silver EM, guys, thanks for the help...I think I'm going to go with the Si motor...

reason being....i haven't heard of a k swap being done for less than 6 grand...my budget is about 2500...love the k series, would love to have it, but not willing to spend 6 grand now on a car i'll only have maybe 2 more years....it's been a lemon since the day I bought it brand new so let's hope it can even last 2 more years

I'd just stick with your stock non vtec engine get it cheap install it for cheap and put your money away for another car if your not intending on keeping it.

another thing to look into and i dont know if you would be interested in it is that:

the D17A5 pistons for the natural gas version HX i think or something or maybe hybrid are high compression and i asked on a forum a while ago if they would even work. Im sure with arp headstuds and 91 and a good tune you could do it but a grand for a kpro plus a k series ecu isnt in your budget.

Just curious, how much labour are you paying?

And no, your transmission will work.

having an h22 in an EM2 is illegal. You cant have an older engine in a newer car. As in the H22 wasnt offered new by honda between 2001-2005 in any of its other cars. Therefore its illegal. You WONT pass e test and if you get pulled over you would be in some ****.

this is correct. the d17a1 trans has much longer gears then the Si. Personally i would go with the si transmission.
