changing starter on swapped engine (d15b)
Hi guys :-)
So i need to change the starter on my 98 civic SI, it has a JDM d15b engine with cold air intake. I am really confused about changing the starter, would the same type of starter that this car will normally take work with the d15b engine? some say yes, some say no..
Also I admit i am trying to pinch pennies a bit right now, and even if it means getting a new or rebuilt starter 6 months from now, I am searching scrap yards for a starter because it would save me over 100$, so can anyone tell me if it's ok to get a starter from a scrap yard?
thanks :-)

As far as a scrap yard starter goes, they can probably check that it works for you by connecting it to a battery and seeing if it does its thing. I'm fairly certain the only D series SOHC starters that are different from yours are maybe older ones from cable clutch trans, or the Civic VX.
When put in the D15b, did you keep your Si trans or the d15b one? I'm pretty sure they're both S40 anyway. I've mixed and matched trans/starters and blocks of just about every possibility and never had an issue with any 92-00 Civic with a d series unless it was a VX. I've used a D16z6 one on a d15b vtec, I've also recently used that same D15b vtec's trans and pulled it from my 93 civic and put it on a y7 block into a 96 Si with a y8 head, using the original starter from the car.

The starter should be for the make of the car not the engine type. The signal is going to travel to the engine through electic current not by gears or something that have to match your engine. Im no expert but most civic starters look the same as long as theyre not too old. Idk if rhis helps but good luck o and i would just buy one of craigslist or something like that its the cheapest way to go. IMO

A D series starter for a DX Civic isn't gonna work in a car that's been swapped to a B-series, so no the starter needs to be for the engine/trans your using more then it needs to be for that particular car.
