Exclamation zc vtec solenoid

Hey all,

I have done a lot of reading on this site and let me start by saying this is a fantastic resource for the relatively uneducated car mechanic!

I have also done a lot of specific research into my particular engine setup, but have become more confused the more I read because theres almost too much information. In addition to this, my topic of research seems to be quite mysterious or disputed amongst the ussual posters on this forum.

I am working on an ice racer, for competition in this coming winters season. I raced last year in a car that was split with my team mate, but this year have gotten my own ride. Unfortunately most of the car knowledge came from my team mate and now I'm stuck. I have a 1994 dx hatchback, however it had already had an engine swap done, and from the best of my knowledge it is a ZC SOHC VTEC. When I got it and started cleaning and tearing it apart, I noticed that there was no vtec solenoid. It had a plate in its place to seal the opening. My question (finally after that huge backstory) is this: What solenoid do I need to find to put back onto the engine? Every one I've seen in pictures, usually has 3 mounting holes, and mine only has 2. Also, will I have issues mounting a particular solenoid to the ECU already in the car.

Im sure ive not included enough technical info, but any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advanced

Welcome to the site.

I'm assuming you're ice racing in Minden? If so, I will see you there for the weekend that is hosted by twin lakes. I'm usually involved in running that event.

First off, what class are you planning to run in? If you're running in rubber, don't worry about vtec as you already have too much power.

For street stud, more power can be useful, but still is not really necessary. Does the car run fine as is?

Yes in minden! nice to meet a fellow racer.

Im running in the street stud class, that is if they ever figure out which tire we will be running :P and yes I was thinking a little more power would be nice... Our civic last year was a basic d series 1.6 non vtec, and felt a little under powered, specifically at the end of the season when half the track was mud :P I thought a little more power in those areas could be useful... As far as having too much power, Ive grown up racing so I'd like to think I would be smart enough to take my foot out of it at the appropriate times haha but we will see...

The car ran rough before I started the minor work Ive done on it... but it needed a new valve cover seal and a throughly cleaned out intake system, so once its back together im expecting it to run nicely.

From what I understand, there wasn't necessarily a problem with the tires but they were making too big of a hole for the size/type of stud. I believe they are looking at going with a different type of stud as well. Will be interesting to see what they end up going with for this season. I know my buddies V8 fiero (Yes the blue one with the giant wing that blows it's rad hose after every race) was hard on studs as were the other guys I helped out last season...

I think you need to find out which ecu you are running and make sure it is correct and matches the engine you are running.

For the vtec solenoid, it should have 3 mounting bold holes. One on either side and one at the bottom. Just google image search zc vtec solenoid and you'll see what they look like. Perhaps you could take a picture of the head where the solenoid bolts up and post it here so we can see?

You will want the single stage vtec solenoid. The 2 stange (double solenoid) is for the D15 dual stage vtec engine which obviously is different than yours.

yes it was definitely some kind of issue with either the pocket, they flew out, and didnt take well to re-studding... I wasnt too big of a fan of the aluminum studds either because of the quick wear put on them (keeping in mind they werent designed for mud :P)

Pictures of the head to follow shortly
