Looks like the Leafs are all but done this year. Another year without playoff hockey in Toronto (7 years)

We thought the 80's leafs had bad teams, but at leat they made the playoffs.
Here's a great 1987 playoff game I still remember watching.

...resurrected thread...

Dragged this thread out of hibernation since the lockout is over and it's Hockey Night In Canada...first Leafs game of the shortened season.

A good start to the season it was, a 2-1 victory over the Habs.
Curious to see the outcome of tonight's game vs. the Sabres.

I will start caring if the Leafs win or lose when they reach the Stanley cup finals.
NHL hockey was better in the 80's and 90's. More fights, more bench clearing brawls, more hits, more goals !
Now it has become more of a business and more like ringette on the ice.

Yep, I've heard (and read) that same viewpoint, Robb. The lockout, in particular, hasn't helped shed a positive light on the sport. Imho, it's cool to read or hear the opinions of people who are really immersed in the NHL and all it encompasses...there are a lot of guys who really know their hockey.

When it comes to the Leafs, isn't it bizarre that many of their fans are still loyal fans? Go figure, lol...

I love hockey and understand it's a rough sport by nature. I understand the hits etc. but what I do not understand is the fights. I get that tempers flare and choice words are flung around the ice, but the fights are just stupid, imo. Has nothing to do with the game and only delays the game. It's not like the guy that wins the fight gets a penatly shot or anything. Usually nobody wins the fights anyways because they break them up. Pointless.

Just play the game and concentrate on putting the puck in the net and not dropping your gloves.

I love the action, but when there's no point to the action, I could care less.

And oh yeah... GO LEAFS GO!!!

Fighting in hockey keeps players from not playing dirty which can cause serious injuries.
Also, nasty words are said on the ice which can push people over the edge.
If someone elbows you in the head, going in for a bodycheck, or slashes you across your legs or arms, you want payback.
A 2 minute minor penalty for a harsh elbow or slash doesnt fit the 'dirty' play.

Good to see the Leafs about halfway up in the Eastern Conference standings...as of this moment, that is.
As quoted from the National Post, "It has been nine years since the team appeared in a playoff game, the longest active drought in the league."

National Post
"... as the Leafs hit the midpoint of their shortened season on Wednesday, a playoff spot is exactly what they hold. Toronto is fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, with a six-point cushion on the team in ninth."

NHL for 2014

Regular season begins in less than a week...time to get this thread out of storage.

Habs take on the Leafs in Toronto the night of Oct 8th. Looks like there are three other games the same night...Vancouver at Calgary, Flyers and Bruins, and the San Jose Sharks vs Kings.
