high speed shake..

I was driving my car on the high way on friday same as any other day and my car starting having this shake to it the faster i went... i noticed it happening a few days ago aswell but friday it was worse...

i didn't feel it in the brakes or steering wheel so im assuming its something to do with my rear wheels... no??

also i know the tires are balances because i got them balanced a few months ago when i put new winter tires on them..

tomorrow im going to check my tire pressure just incase thats the problem but from just taking a look it doesn't seem that any of my tires are low on air.

im also going to jsut lift the car and see if any of the tires have any give for any reason...

but just incase i don't find anything wrong what other problems could this be??

if anyone has any thoughts on this let me know.. i need to solve this before my car brakes down on the highway... lol

thanks in advance

How fast were you going? what speed did you notice? did the shake happened when you just sped up and went away when you werent on the gas?

started happening around 80-100

im going to check what i can today... if i don't see anything i'll pay more attention next time and see if i can get more details as to when it happens, and if taking my foot off the gas effects it.

Tire balanace (maybe you threw a weight), bent rim, shitty tire, front end loose?
Could be many things.
Let us know what you find.

Could be build up of snow on inside of the rim.

ya, snow build up will do that, i've had that happen. bad wheel bearings can also produce a really slight shimmy

well i took a look today and i lefted up all sides and started to give each tire a shake to see if there was any give on any other them.. all tires seemed solid except for my front passenger tire has some left and right give... not up and down but just left and right.. it would shake a bit if i tugged at it..

what does this mean???

you need to change your bearing. also check the tie rods... or maybe its just a snow build up on your rim. try to avoid parking in the snow banks as possible. whenever you do park it in the snow for like hours, especially when we have our windchill effects, it does that.

most likely snow in the rims but get the tie rods checked out.... if its a vibration you feel in your seat then most likely its in the rear...if you're feeling it in the steering wheel look toward the front.
A bad tie rod with play may give you a vibration in the steering wheel since its the component that is acting on your front wheels when steering....if there's enough play you'll feel a vibration when driving straight ahead but probably more like a clunk at the point when you first decelerate or accelerate.

check the tie rod again to see if its the inner or outer... put the car up and
grab the tire @ 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and give it a shake. have someone put their hand on the outer tie rod..where it meets with the knuckle (the ball socket). if they feel the play at that point then its the outer tie rod. then do it again with someone holding the inner tie rod at the boot attached to the steering rack. squeeze the boot so you can feel the inner ball socket joint and if you can feel the play at that point, its the inner tie rod.

if it was a loose wheel bearing you would probably feel the play when you shake the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock as well as 9 and 3 o'clock.
it might also give you a droning or growling sound when you load up the wheel bearing like going around a corner.

was the vibration happening when you were braking or just driving along?

we had 8 customers come in to the dealership right after a good snowfall complaining of vibrations when they drove at speeds of 80-100. The fix? rinse off the blocks of ice and snow lodged in their rims... the snow acts as a giant wheel weight offsetting your perfectly balanced wheels...

yeah well although my front passenger tire did have a bit of give if i was to grab at 9 and 3 oclock and shake but this morning on the highway i felt no vibrations...

im guessing that the problem was snow or ice and the recent warm weather must have melted it and now the car is back to normal.... i'll keep my awarness up while im driving for awhile incase it comes back but im hoping that was the problem and that the warm weather just helped me out.....

thanks for all the help.

ye exact thing happened to me on 427 once i reached 80 car started shaking like crazy, lol i was shook, but as the weather got a little better it just went away. another thing u could do is just blast the wheels and what not with hot water at a car wash this will most likely work if it's just the ice build up.

i'd still check the tie rods even if the vibration isn't there anymore.

^^ditto, a tie rod loose, no big deal untill it breaks. then you at the very least will have alot of damage to you front end if you don't hit anyone else or something else when you can't steer.
